Recently our family spent a wonderful week at the lake and stumbled upon a fantastic little store/restaurant called the Owls Nest we had a fantastic brunch buffet and very reasonably priced. There are also cabins there, that we looked at, recently done over and very clean. We have decided to rent one of those adorable cabins next year. The staff was also very pleasant. I will be recommending this restaurant to all of my friends and family. The address is 1736 Mount Major Highway, Alton NH (RR11)

(migrated from old forum) During the morning hours of August 15, 2008, we saw this bald eagle fly down the bay, have an aerial fight with another bird, and then fly up to where the bay meets the broads for a rest. An incredibly beautiful sight!

(Migrated from old forum) 60 years ago, Ed and Dot Pegg bought their property at the end of a long dirt road. The people to the north (the Kings) said "there goes the neighborhood." Despite midnight attacks by the ghosts of the French Brothers, Peirre and Jacques, they build a small cabin which they named "Shuda". So Ed begat Ted and Jo, and Ted begat Judith, Janet and David, and David begat Allison and Michael. The cabin became konwn as the looney bin. As the family expanded a new structure was built that holds many names, "outta" a.k.a. the love shack. As the things weren't bad enough they adopted a pack of wild dogs.(And thats the way we became Pegg Bunch) Oh and by the way they also put to shame the neighbors at the annual putt putt outting and at nickles.

(Migrated from old forum) What a sad and devastating Easter for the friends and families of the Bay and especially the ABCCC. (Alton Bay Christian Conference Center) What started, supposedly, as a brush fire behind the public restrooms by Shibley's escalated tremendously due to winds, dry conditions, and the help of some propane tanks. When the fire hit a propane tank near Shibley's, it caused an explosion that could be felt up on the ABCCC field. Some of our friends were standing there watching the efforts being made to extinguish the flames when they were nearly knocked off their feet in the blast. The fire reached a height of 11 alarms, meaning eleven different fire stations had responded to and were working on the fire together. Rt 11 and Rand Hill Rd (and all roads between) were closed down to all traffic as the winds spread the fire, devastating, at last count, 52 buildings. From everything we know these buildings include many campground houses, and JP's Chinese restaurant; also possibly Shibley's ice cream stand and Putt-Putt/ the Post Office, and, of course, the public restrooms, though they *appear* to be out of the path of destruction. The homes destroyed include several of our life-long friends' houses and we are left wondering what will happen in the few short months left before everyone will want to come up for the summer. Aside from insurance issues, it may be impossible for as many houses as were in that area to be rebuilt there due to current codes, and especially the threat of another fire. We are left thankful that our cottage is intact, and that the destroyed cottages were at least empty, but deeply saddened by the probable loss of the house my grandparents grew up in, as well as the loss of our friends' houses. We have all lost a part of our Alton Bay history that can never be replaced or even replicated. The fire is currently still burning, but contained. Many of the crews have headed home after a long day of work. We'll have to wait till morning to see what true devastation has been left behind. Prayers to all.

I had the save images turned off on the camera so I turned it on in the middle of the fire. Depending on how it turns out I might make a video of the fire later today. If you haven't been watching the other forums on winnipesaukee.com here are a few notes from them: 4/25/08 WeirsBeachBoater: I am hearing from 2 sources there is a sizeable fire on the mountain? Can anyone confirm? Resident 2B: Based upon what I am hearing on the scanner, they are pulling together five-man crews from the towns in the LRMA to hit it in the morning. Meredith and Gilford will be sending crews and I am sure other departments will as well. kashmir9999: We just got back from seeing the "brush fire" we went to Alton Mountain Rd. You could see about 7 "hot spots" and a wall of fire working its way down toward 11. According to the fireman on the we were talking to, he was guessing that 40 acres has already burned. DRH: They are using a large helicopter with a suspended water bag to make repeated trips between Alton Bay (by the Rt. 11 Scenic View) and the fire. While I was at the Scenic View at around 9:45 AM this morning the Alton Police blocked Rt. 11 in both directions and the helicopter landed in the middle of the road for refueling. A fuel tanker truck was waiting and the process took about 10 - 15 minutes. Then the copter took off and resumed it's trips between the Bay and the fire.
